①　等位接続詞　：　and, but, or

この３つの等位接続詞は、長文読解・英文解釈・英文和訳において非常に重要な要素です。

and, but, or…などの等位接続詞は、「前後に文法的に等しい要素を並列する」。

【例題】：次の英文を和訳しなさい。 (慶応義塾大学過去問題より)

The term “child labor” is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.

「前後に文法的に等しい要素を並列する」とは？？

・andを見つけたら、後述される部分に着目し、並列されている要素を特定し、文法的に同じものをand以前に遡って探す。

→具体的な方法を、実践問題に従ってやってみましょう。

【解法】

 The term “child labor” is often defined as work

 [ that deprives children of ( their childhood, their potential and their dignity) ], 　…(1) 

 and [ that is harmful to ( physical and mental) development ]. …(2)  

・～ and their dignity, :

andの後ろには、the dignityという名詞。→ andの前から遡って、名詞を探すと…、

their childhood, their potential and their dignityの並列だと気付く。

・英語では、ＡとＢとＣと記述したい場合、A and B and Cとは記述しない。

A, B and C.と書く。複数並列する場合, andで並列終わりを表す。

・( their childhood, their potential and their dignity) の部分は, andにより並列された名詞の塊が、前置詞ofの目的語となっていると解釈できる。

・deprive A of B : 「AからBを奪う」というイディオム。

・二つ目のandに続くのは、[ that is harmful ～. 」という関係詞節が続いているので、andより以前からthatによる関係詞節を探すと [ that deprives ～. ] が並列されていることがわかる。

→　本問における [that - ①] and [that - ②].は双方ともworkを修飾するとわかる。

【解答】 「児童労働」という言葉は、子どもたちから幼少時代や、その可能性や尊厳を奪い、身体的・精神的発達に有害な仕事であると定義されることが多い。
